RESPONSE - Refugee Sponsorship and Settlement.
Response serves a community of African-Australians who came to Newcastle as United Nations refugees and asylum seekers. They are native Swahili and French speakers, working hard to learn English, and come from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi, often via refugee camps in Tanzania, Kenya or Uganda where they have spent several years in appalling poverty and need. The "Karibu Gospel Choir" ("Karibu" means "welcome" in Swahili) provides for them an opportunity to showcase their beautiful cultural heritage, their brilliant vocal ability and their rhythm and style as they sing of their faith in the God who has led them through many difficult times to the great nation of Australia.
Many opportunities to serve these beautiful people arise; from providing community transport for them by driving the Grainery Care Bus; to our Family to Family Partnership Program where opportunities for cultural exchange and the development of deep personal connections occur.
Other programs include the "Hope Learning Centre" (a homework club for students at school, TAFE or university), "Healthy Living in Australia" seminars and a Swahili church service twice a month - African style!
